Lead:

More kings, but not heading in the right direction.

Intro:

After Solomon’s death and the split of the kingdom, the first few kings of Judah did some things right, and as we noted yesterday, at least Judah had a couple sorta good kings — something the northern kingdom of Israel didn’t have.

Today, though, includes a turn for the worse as Jehoshaphat, who started out strong, makes a critical mistake. Today we also catch a story that is one of those that I think is evidence of God’s sense of humor.

Today’s word exploration: Alliance

Sponsor:

Bible segment (read along with The Bible Project):

Passage: 2 Chronicles 18-21
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 121
Words: ~3075

Thinking/reflection segment:

Alliance. Close association of powerful individuals or nations for a common objective. Such alliances were ratified by various means, including gifts, oaths, dowries and marriages, and covenants.

In patriarchal times Israelites entered into alliances with foreign nations without hesitation…Later, Moses forbade the Israelites to make alliances with the Canaanites primarily for religious reasons. In the time of the judges the Israelites were reminded of that command (Jgs 2:1–3), but Joshua 9 tells how Israel was tricked into making an alliance with the Gibeonites.(1)

Wisdom segment:

Passage: Psalm 68
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 35
Words: ~574

Love you!
