Is this your kind of confidence?

Intro:

You’re on Facebook, and somebody posts a quotation. What do you think?

Confidence isn't thinking you are better than everyone else, it's realizing that you have no reason to compare yourself to anyone else. ~ Maryam Hasnaa

Sounds good, right? Well, one of the things we do here is get better at evaluating worldviews and truth claims, so we’ll talk about exactly why I think it is true — and isn’t true — in our Think and Reflect segment today.

It also kind of fits with the last line we read yesterday. Remember Jesus tells His disciples that He’s going to be killed and rise again three days later, and Peter takes Him aside and gets in His business. Jesus’ response: “Set your mind on God’s interests, not on humankind’s interests.” Today we will see that doing so will come with a cost. But as we’ll discuss, that’s not a bad thing.

Thinking/reflection segment:

One thing Christian philosophers will sometimes argue is that given that God is God (and we’re not), every false worldview borrows from the Christian worldview. So that saying…I saw it go by one Facebook traced it to people in the Buddhist community (I’d never heard it before). Listen again. It is true, but who is the implied standard of righteousness?

Consider confidence from a biblical worldview:

Confidence — A state of self-assurance regarding one’s status or ability, often grounded in human achievements. Scripture insists that Christian confidence is to be grounded in what God has done for believers, rather than in what they themselves have achieved.

Confidence, basis of — The confidence of believers, is grounded in God’s character, actions and trustworthy promises, rather than human achievements.
Confidence originates with God
In his unchanging and faithful nature
In his covenant
In election
In his past deliverances
In his word
In his promises
Confidence is centered on Jesus Christ
Confidence is mediated by the Holy Spirit

Confidence, results of — God-given assurance produces spiritual maturity and stability, so that believers may withstand the adverse conditions of life.
Confidence in God’s protection removes fear of disaster
Confidence in God’s purposes produces hope
Confidence in God’s presence makes his people bold
Confidence in God enables believers to endure difficulties
Confidence in God leads to awareness of security (1)
