Lead:

Today we’re just reading the Bible.

Intro:

All right folks, buckle up. Today Paul launches into a diatribe, and I mean that quite literally. And I wouldn’t have really described it as such except that two different commentaries I looked at used that exact word.

Yesterday we experienced Paul slow-rolling into his letter with what some have called an indirect appeal. The Galatians have a false-teacher problem, and Paul rather emphatically says there’s only one Gospel, that it’s not from him, and that even if he or even a spirit being of some sort preaches something else, they shouldn’t pay attention.

One other thing I’ll point out as we get rolling — today you’re going to hear a number of appeals to the Scriptures. What’s interesting is that at this moment in history, the “Bible” was what we now call the Old Testament, and Paul’s making an appeal to the Galatians for the gospel being found in the Old Testament. That’s really important for us to remember, because it’s not uncommon today for people to talk about following the path of Jesus and being like Jesus, but they say or promote stuff that denies the Old Testament is authoritative. So…it’s something to keep in mind…here’s Paul in one of the most accepted and authoritative documents of the ancient near east citing the Old Testament as authoritative. And he’s not pussyfooting around saying, “Well, we try to be like Jesus and that transforms us.”

Not used today, but stuff I like:

 D. A. Carson, For the Love of God: A Daily Companion for Discovering the Riches of God’s Word., vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books, 1998).

Craig S. Keener, The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1993). <—this, and it’s OT companion, are great commentaries if you like something more than a study Bible and less than a set of 66 books — they add a lot of interesting details. Keener’s a killer apologist, too.

The Story of Reality, Greg Koukl — Love this book. A killer intro to the Christian worldview that is philosophically and theologically sound while being accessible to all readers.
