Lead:

Wrapping up 2 Chronicles with an interesting perspective on repentance.

Intro:

Today wraps up the procession of Kings and ends with the downfall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586BC. Ultimately we remember that this is what God let happen to Israel as a consequence for their generally continued apostasy. But listen to who the Chronicler lays the blame on…it’s the failure of the priests and leaders! The land will now have a Sabbath rest of 70 years before Cyrus, King of Persia lets the Israelites return to rebuild the temple.

A final note on history — remember that this would also be the end of the Hebrew bible. The order is different and does so because Judaism is still expecting the promised Messiah (who, of course, Christians recognize as Jesus).

This also concludes the Old Testament in the read through with The Bible Project’s reading plan. Tomorrow, Matthew!
