Lead: You’re a casemaker, an ambassador. What do we know from Job that supports doing so naked?

Intro: Today we wrap up Job. If there’s a key term or theme, it’s suffering. If there’s a repeated thing I’ve emphasized, it’s that we may not have all the answers, and the question is whether or not we are going to trust God. But what’s up with this naked thing? I’ll get to that after we wrap up the book.

Apologetics/reflections segment:

The “problem of evil” is about as old as humanity itself. I won’t write them out here, but the classic logic problem gets back to a simple, foundational question: Do we think we have perfect knowledge and can pass moral judgment on God?

If there’s a key verse in Job, it’s back in the prologue, chapter 1, verses 20-22:

Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped, saying: Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will leave this life., The LORD gives, and the LORD takes away. Blessed be the name of the LORD. Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything. (1)

IF God is who He is, and IF there’s more to life than what we see and know, THEN the question is whether or not we’re going to trust Him. Job’s response was worship — ascribing worth. And I’ll argue that that should be our response, too.

Wisdom segment:
Passage: Psalm 146
Translation: NET (New English Translation)
Words: ~164
